Trauma-Focused Therapy

Trauma-focused therapy is an area we specialize in at Family Strategies Counseling and Mediation. Trauma-informed therapy recognizes and emphasizes understanding how traumatic experiences impact behavioral, emotional, and physical well-being. Trauma-Focused treatment focuses on the connection between traumatic experiences and the behavioral responses to them. The purpose is to offer skills and strategies to understand better, cope with, and process emotions and memories associated with the trauma.

Benefits of Trauma-Focused Therapy

By working with a ptsd therapist, you can learn more about what you are experiencing, address concerns, and develop healthy coping strategies. Specifically, we focus on:

  • Learning about trauma
  • Re-Establishing Saftey
  • Identifying Triggers
  • Developing Healthy Coping Skills
  • Decreasing Traumatic Stress Symptoms
  • Practicing Trauma Processing

The goal of trauma-informed therapy is to regain power and control over an experience by re-narrating your story. Over time, you have the opportunity to process and organize these experiences to help understand how they affect your view of yourself and the world.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR is a treatment that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that result from disturbing life experiences. During an EMDR session, the client tends to emotionally disturbing material in brief doses while simultaneously focusing on external stimuli. The ptsd therapist will generally use eye moment as the external stimuli but might also use other stimulants like hand-tapping or audio stimulation.
