We partner with TriCare medical insurance to better serve our military and veteran population. TriCare is a healthcare program for uniformed service members, retirees, and their families. TriCare provides coverage to all beneficiaries, including military marriage counseling.
Does Tricare Pay for Military Marriage Counseling?
Per their insurance policy, TriCare will cover marriage counseling if one member of the couple has symptoms that meet the criteria for a mental health diagnosis. Such as:
- PTSD
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Adjustment Issues
- Anger Management
All of the above are considered likely factors that contribute to marital dysfunction. In these cases, counseling is a medical necessity. When a diagnosed spouse or a member of the family takes part in the sessions, it becomes family counseling, which TriCare also covers.
Why Us for Military Marriage Counseling?
Family Strategies Counseling and Mediation offer marriage counseling to military families, in addition to a host of other services. We believe in a holistic approach to therapy that aims to consider your whole person. In addition, we retain an expert team of mental health counselors, licensed marriage and family counselors, and faith-based counselors that are eager to help.
Services We Offer to Military Families
Because we understand the complex issues that military families face, we offer specific services to help. In addition, most of these services TriCare insurance covers. That said, consider working with us if you are struggling with the following:
Poor Communication Patterns
According to Gottman’s “Four Horsemen of Divorce,” hypercriticism is often the first indicator that a marriage is on the rocks. If you and your partner are overly critical of one another, that is a red flag. Hypercriticism is a dangerous pattern to fall into because neither person feels heard.
Mental Health-Related Issues
Mental health counseling is available if you are diagnosed or suspect that you or your partner may be struggling. Our therapists have diverse backgrounds concerning mental health concerns. Some of these concerns include but are not limited to the following:
- Depression
- Anxiety Disorders
- Bipolar Disorder
- Personality Disorders
- Mood Disorders
Treating PTSD or Trauma-Related Issues
Trauma-focused therapy is one of the areas we specialize in at Family Strategies Counseling & Mediation. Trauma-informed therapy recognizes and emphasizes understanding how traumatic experiences impact behavioral, emotional, and physical well-being. Many military members suffer from a condition described as complex PTSD, which requires slightly different treatment options over those with PTSD. Treatment for complex PTSD can vary; not every method will work for everyone. The most common choice is talk therapy, medication, or EMDR.
Strategic Family Therapy
When a marriage struggles, the rest of the family will suffer too. Strategic family therapy combines two major therapeutic theories – strategic therapy and family therapy. This kind of therapy differs from other family therapy strategies in that it is a highly structured method of treatment rather than free forming. The goal is to plan, execute strategically, and measure outcomes to help solve inner-familial problems.
Conclusion
Our office partners with TriCare medical insurance to better serve our military and veteran population. Because we understand the complex issues that military families face, we have many available resources, most of which TriCare insurance covers. These services include but are not limited to mental health services, PTSD treatment options, couples counseling, and family therapy.

Hello, Do you accept Tricare for PTSD and marriage counseling? Also, are your counselors certified in the Gottman method? I’m in my first year of retirement from the Army and need assistance.
Hi Eduardo! Thanks for the comment. You can give out office a call and our assistant can direct you to the best therapist based on your needs. Note that we are in Illinois so unless you are local we can only provide online counseling services.
I’m currently struggling with my relationship due to betrayal trauma while my husband is deployment.
Hi Nhi, betrayal in a relationship can be difficult to recover from. I might suggest seeking counseling if both you and your husband are willing to work on marriage.
Do you have Christian Counselors that are certified in Marriage Counseling from a Biblical Perspective, nearby?
Hi Mark,
Our staff are formerly trained as counselors, but many of them have extensive biblical backgrounds, such as past work in ministry. We offer in-office counseling in Homewood, IL, otherwise we do counseling online. Please call our office at (708) 798-5433 for scheduling and insurance related questions.
I would also like to know some information about this same question. I’m definitely in the same boat as Mark and am looking for “Christian Counselors” certified in marriage counseling, has a “Biblical Perspective” and close to my local community.
Hello Jay, without knowing where you are, take a look on Psychology Today and see if anyone advertises for Christian counseling specifically. Additionally, some ministers offer counseling within a religious setting so you could ask around your place of worship.
Do you only provide services for certain states?
Hi Mandy, if you have TriCare coverage it is usually either East or West. Please call our office at (708) 798-5433 and our assistant can check if we accept your insurance!
